A trip abroad is off the cards for most people in 2021. Luckily, the UK is home to a wealth of beautiful nature spots, quirky towns and hip-and-happening urban centres – plenty to keep the whole family entertained during a summer staycation.

In this article, we’ll highlight some of the best UK holidays you can take by car, and we’ll finish off by outlining some key car preparations to ensure everything is plain sailing.

Historic City Break – Edinburgh in Scotland

There’s a reason why Edinburgh frequently tops lists of the best UK cities to visit. A beautiful blend of rugged history, stunning scenery and modern bars, restaurants and galleries, Edinburgh can please many different pallets. From scaling the impressive Arthur’s Seat to enjoying the quaint cobbled streets for a spot of shopping, you aren’t likely to get bored in Scotland’s capital. The sheer variety of activities and accommodation types on offer also means that all budgets and accessibility needs can be catered for.

Village Retreat – Cotswolds in England

The Cotswolds is a rolling green area of sleepy villages, gorgeous hillsides and natural beauty that stretches across many counties in South West England. Thanks to its expansive area, it’s easy to tailor a Cotswolds trip to your personal preferences. This might mean a picturesque cycling holiday, or a weekend relaxing, dining and shopping in a quaint village. Simply put, the Cotswolds has something for every type of family on any budget.

Coastal Adventure – The Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland

Giant's Causeway

There’s nothing to say you can’t hop on a ferry for your summer road trip. A short leap across the Irish Sea will land you in Northern Ireland where you can enjoy the Causeway Coastal Route. This scenic drive will take you through many of Northern Ireland’s most impressive attractions, including the majestic Giant’s Causeway, the sobering Titanic Belfast museum, and the iconic Dark Hedges, made famous by Game of Thrones.

If you’re searching for a more modern, urban getaway, then Brighton is a diverse and dynamic resort to kick back and have some fun. A seaside town at its heart, Brighton is full of rides, attractions and entertainment for all the family, while the pier and streets are also packed with bars, eateries and nightlife if you’re seeking that more adult, cosmopolitan feel.

If you’re a hiking enthusiast, then the Brecon Beacons cannot be beaten. With miles of unspoilt fields, stunning mountains and mysterious caves, this jewel in the Welsh countryside is a welcome breath of fresh air after months of lockdown – and has rightfully earned its title as a National Park. Fun fact: the formidable SAS use the area to train – but don’t worry, as there are hiking trails aplenty suited for all levels of ability. Depending on your budget, you can either book into a hotel in one of the many quaint villages, or opt for some camping in the wild.

Road trip checklist

Before you set off on your summer getaway, make sure your car is ready for the task ahead with this simple road trip checklist to prepare for a long car trip.

Maintenance Checks

  • Check fuel and fluid levels are topped up including oil, coolant and screen washer fluid

  • Ensure all four tyres are of a good tread depth (above the minimum 1.6mm), are properly inflated and are in good nick

  • Get another person to help you check that all lights are working

  • Test your brakes and ensure they brake smoothly and noiselessly (Mr Tyre, is happy to check the condition of your brakes and tyres free of charge)

Plan Ahead

  • Check your breakdown cover is valid and you have the policy number and phone number handy

  • Plan ahead by pinpointing service stations you may call in at and if using Google Maps or Apple Maps you’ll be able to check for roadworks along the route

  • It’s worth checking the weather forecast - we’re not always graced with blue skies and sunshine in the summer months, so knowing to expect high wind or storms means you can drive accordingly
