What is leaking from my car exhaust?
Even though it might be alarming, water dripping from a car exhaust is a fairly normal occurrence, particularly in cold weather. That’s because water vapour forms and condenses as a byproduct of the engine combustion process.
However, leaking exhausts can occasionally indicate a problem. To help you identify when exhaust leaks are normal and when they need to be addressed, we’ve put together this handy article to give you clarity.
Why is there water dripping from my exhaust?
As an engine runs and fuel is burned, water vapour and carbon dioxide are formed as a byproduct. These gases travel from the hot engine to the cooler exhaust system, meaning the water vapour sometimes will collect and condense in the exhaust pipe before dripping out. This type of car ‘leak’ is not usually a problem and is part of the ordinary operation of the vehicle, especially in the colder months.
When is a leaking exhaust not normal?
An exhaust drip is often normal and a product of engine water vapour condensing in cooler conditions. However, sometimes it is a cause for concern and could impact your fuel efficiency and vehicle performance.
Here are a few signs that may indicate when a leaking exhaust is not normal:
- If the leak is accompanied by a burning or gas smell either outside or inside the vehicle, this can be indicative of an oil leak or a faulty component.
- If lots of water is leaking out rather than a slow drip, this excessive discharge is something you should get checked out.
- If the liquid isn’t clear, it might actually be anti-freeze or coolant that is leaking out, which points to a damaged head gasket or other worn component.
- If you can hear hissing, popping or rumbling sounds when you move or accelerate, this can be a sign of a leak in the exhaust.
- If you have noticed visual problems with your exhaust along with leaking, such as excessive corrosion, rust or holes, then this should be investigated.
Have you noticed any of the above or something else that seems unusual? Always take your vehicle to a motor expert for examination if you’re ever unsure.
How to fix a leaking exhaust
Any type of unusual car leak, whether from the exhaust or otherwise, should be assessed, diagnosed and resolved by a trained professional to ensure the best outcome for your vehicle. It’s never wise to attempt to fix any issues yourself as you may exacerbate the issue.
It’s also really important to arrange your yearly MOT to catch problems and assess the overall condition of your car. Car owners are also recommended to have their car regularly serviced, whether alongside a scheduled MOT or separately, to ensure its quality.
