Your guide to low profiles tyres

sports car with low profile tyres

That sleek and sporty look on a car? There’s a good chance low profile tyres are a contributing factor. Thanks to a much smaller aspect ratio of rubber to alloy on low profile tyres, vehicle handling and steering are greatly improved, all while giving that stylish appearance.

We’ve put together this guide detailing the benefits and drawbacks of low profile tyres so if you’re thinking of purchasing a car with these you are suitably informed on the subject.

What are low profile tyres?

Low profile tyres have a shorter sidewall in relation to their width when compared to most regular tyres.

Also known as low pro tyres, they usually have an aspect ratio of 50 or below. This means the height of the tyre’s side wall is half or less than the overall width, and they will need to have a larger wheel installed before the tyres are fitted.

A low profile tyre doesn’t contain as much air or cushioning as traditional tyres, which improves handling, braking and cornering. As such, they are commonly fitted to high-performance or sports vehicles, or are on cars that will undergo high-speed driving. They are not often found on family cars due to the increased noise and driving discomfort.

What are the benefits of low profile tyres?

  • Improved vehicle handling
  • Enhanced cornering ability
  • More precise steering
  • Better grip and traction in dry conditions
  • Sleek, sporty and modern appearance

What are the drawbacks of low profile tyres?

  • The vehicle’s wheel (ie alloy) must be larger, incurring additional costs to change
  • Less cushioning, which leads to a more uncomfortable ride
  • The reduced air increases susceptibility to damage from potholes
  • Shorter lifespan due to decreased ability to withstand shocks and wear
  • More expensive than standard tyres
  • Generally noisier compared to standard models
